Happy Cinco De Mayo Amigas!

Img_9704 Img_9770_2 Not many people know this but I was born in Mexico. I came here when I was 5 years old. I have a huge Mexican/American family. None of the Mexicans in my family celebrate Cinco de Mayo, but all the Americans do. I celebrate because I am married to a gringo and he loves my culture, in fact he thinks he is Mexican. I have not been all there lately, My abuelita (grandmother) has been really ill for a year now and it has finally taken a toll on me. I realized this when I was walking the other day and just stopped and bawled my eyes out! In front of everyone not even caring what they thought. I feel kind of guilty celebrating when this has been a hard week, but I have to have some fun in my life to get throughout this tough time…… Yikes this is a downer blog today…….! I told myself that I was only going to put happy things on this blog. But I felt like getting it all out and thank you for listening! Now to the fun day tomorrow…. I am making Tijuana stand Tacos. What are they you ask? Carne Asada (beef) , tortillas, cabbage, radishes ,onions and fresh panela cheese. Yummy ! I am also making homemade beans. Having 4 families over to celebrate the day Mexico fought the French in Pueblo, Mexico and sent them back home. It is not Mexican Independence Day as everyone thinks, that is September 15. I had a full circle Moment  yesterday. I was at school  , bringing in the the pinata , beans and music. My daughter was wearing a Mexican dress , and as I was looking at her when a weird feeling came over me. I was back in my Kindergarten class in 1975. I went to a school where I was the only Mexican girl in the school. I barely spoke English. I loved my Kindergarten school teacher, Mrs Greeny! I would just hang around her at recess  and just stare at her. I wanted to be a teacher just like her!  Well I didn’t have many friends because I was new and we did not understand each other. Well I think my teacher felt bad for me (not realizing I was happy just hanging with her). She brought in a Pinata, chips and tortillas to celebrate Cinco de Mayo!  She asked me to wear my special Mexican dress. Talk about feeling special that day! Here I am 31 years later……a Teacher and sharing things from Mexico with the students, while my daughter has on her Mexican Dress! What a feeling! What is your Full Circle moment? I would love to hear about it! Thanks for reading today and if I haven’t gotten back to you with e-mails I promise I will! Also sweet Andrea tagged me so I will post that next time.  here are more pictures of the Fiesta favors:Img_9756 Img_9774

Happy Cinco De Mayo Lilia! It is such a fun festive and colorful culture you have! I just love it! I am sorry to hear of your grandmother being ill. Just know we all go through the same circle of life…just at different times so we can all relate in some way so don’t think you are being a downer!

Happy Cinco De Mayo Lilia!! I sure wish I was there to eat carne asada tacos with you! (they are one of my very favorite foods!) I grew up in a small community in Colorado that had a very large Mexican population (because of migrant workers) and one of my very best friends was Mexican. She taught me a lot about her culture and I always loved eating at her house!! I took Spanish in highschool and now my 15 year old daughter is taking it and we practice together all of the time! I have called her little spanish names since she was a baby! In fact, she really wanted a Quinceañera for her 15th birthday, and still wants one for her 16th because we did not do it! lOL! Anyway, I’m rambling, but just shows you we have so much more in common than you knew!!
I am so sorry you abuelita is not doing well!! Mine has been very touch and go this year as well, and it is so hard. We are very close too…
Lastly, did you make the candles? I have been searching the net all evening for blank candles like those for a project I want to do!! But no luck so far! Yours look gorgeous!
Have a wonderful celebration, and I’m sending you big hugs!!
    ~Cerri xoxo

I loved your kindergarten story, and you will be so happy that I have a sweet little boy from Mexico who knew NO English the day he came in August. Now he speaks English beautifully and has so many friends! He is one of the most popular boys in the class!! Hurray for Jose!
    Have a great weekend!

I’m awfully sorry about your grandma. I know how stressful it can be when someone close is terribly ill. I’ll say a prayer for you and your family. We celebrated Cinco de Mayo with lunch at our favorite Mexican restaurant. (I love the proliferation of good Mexican restaurants around here in the last few years. Even in a small town like ours, we have two really good ones, and one that we haven’t checked out yet.) Peace and blessings. –Susan R.C.

  15. Heidi Says:

Hope you had a good celebration. In true gringa fashion, we celebrated with fajitas at a dinner party last night.

  16. darla Says:

Came across your blog from a friends blog. My Cinco do Mayo post is a day late but I have one of the same candles you do. We aren’t Mexican by heritage, I just celebrate any and every holiday that comes by. Always ready to party!

  17. Gypsy Purple-Chamara Says:

So sorry about your grandmother…I understand that feeling so very very well!!!!!!!!
One of my full-circle moments was watching my youngest at my nieces wedding…a bridesmaid….her mother was a bridesmaid at my Mom`s wedding, I was at hers…her daughter at mine and my daughter at hers…it`s not often that a full circle can happen like that

  18. Monicaa Says:

Awee look at her in that dress, so cute!
I hope you are having a better week and that things are looking up for your grandmother, those sorts of things are always so draining but always make you realize what truly matters.
    Love ya girlie 🙂
